It’s a new day, and my Sunshine makes me so very happy. Peach is currently whelping a litter of six, so our interactions are slightly limited by her duties as a mama, but we still make time for some cuddles.
Peach is what some in the rat community call a Heart Rat. A heart rat is one with whom you share a deeper, more special bond, who lives in your heart.
I bred Peach and she is just over a year old. The litter she’s currently whelping/raising is her last, and once weaned, her babies will be separated according to gender and placed in their respective mischiefs with a couple of older rats who will mentor them in the ways of being juvenile and eventually adult rats. Some may even be adopted to pet homes or breeders after they reach at least 8 weeks of age.
Though, more than likely these babies will become pets, as they’re mostly female and hairless. It’s not recommended to breed with female hairless, as they can experience lactation issues and sometimes accidentally smother newborns because there is no fur to create a buffer between the mother and kitten to allow air to flow.
For now, I’m enjoying my beautiful, sweet Peach and her kittens all to myself. 💜
